5 Questions With...

Building a home is often a once in a lifetime experience - something Josh Bremer and his team at Bremer Homes respect. That is why we “Build with a Higher Standard.” Bremer Homes combines a higher standard of craftsmanship, materials, functional design and communication to provide a home that is built to last and always exceeds expectations. “We value our clients and are dedicated to giving them the best product and experience possible,” he says.

Q1: How does your family-owned and operated status affect your approach to business?
We have two very important family values that we use at home that have also been the values we have built our business on. For example, we embrace the philosophies of “treat others the way you would like to be treated” and “always do your best.” These two value statements make a huge impact on the relationships we have with our clients, suppliers, employees and subcontractors and the product we sell. Everyone benefits when we do business the right way.

Also, as a small family business, we very much value the hard-earned money the client is spending. We work hard to keep our overhead low to be able to give the client the best price possible. The end result is a home they will love and cherish for years to come.

Q2: What is one common myth regarding home building you encounter and how do you address it?
Many people who think about building a custom home think they need to start with an architect to have their plan nailed down before they find a builder. However, while architects are well educated in their craft, sometimes their scope of experience is broad. Most don’t exclusively design homes. It is common for architectural firms to dabble in commercial architecture or designing buildings above three stories. This spreads their expertise among many different types of buildings, with perhaps less focus on single-family homes.

On the other hand, designing from a builder’s perspective gives you a home design that has been tested in real life. This makes builders more aware of trends and specialized in creating personal spaces. It comes down to a generalist versus specialist approach.

Bremer Homes is a full-service design to build company that works with clients to bring their ideas and vision to a physical reality. Working with clients from the design phase all the way through final construction provides a seamless process that works well.

Q3: Why is Northeast Indiana such a great place to put down roots?
Low cost of living and great schools and churches make the area particularly attractive to families. We have everything you need (shopping, dining, entertainment)−without all of the traffic that a big city brings. We are just a few hours away from bigger cities like Indianapolis and Chicago for quick getaways and we have direct flights to Florida. It’s all here if you want it.

Q4: What hobbies or activities do you enjoy in your spare time?
When I’m not working, you’ll find me spending time with my family and playing with and training our golden retriever puppy, Ruby. Golf, flying airplanes and trumpet playing also make the list.

Q5: What trends are you seeing in homebuilding?
There has definitely been an influence from reality shows on HGTV like “Fixer Upper” in terms of style. Homeowners have very specific ideas and mental images of their dream home. They also have a budget, a schedule and often predefined expectations. It’s our job as a builder to expose them to home building in the real world, so that they are happy with the end product. We are here to save customers time, money and frustration as they build their dream home. In fact, we don’t even have “standard” floorplans. Instead, we will work with you to create a customized floorplan that will cater to you, your lifestyle and needs.

Technology is also becoming a bigger player in home design. Think touchless faucets, heated toilet seats, wireless programmable thermostats, LED lights and built-in home entertainment. iPhones can be set up to control lighting, home security, thermostats, single outlets and more. Today’s homes are smarter than ever and that trend is expected to continue.
