Caring Enough to Listen

Effectively caring for allergy and asthma patients requires more than a medical degree; it also takes a listening ear. According to Dr. Adam Updegraff of Fort Wayne Allergy & Asthma Consultants, there is often more to a particular condition than meets the eye.

“It’s important to hear what people are saying to you,” says Updegraff. “Otherwise, you’re not really addressing why they’ve come.”

After all, explains Fort Wayne Allergy & Asthma Consultants CEO Dr. Naresh Patel, “it’s often a variety of symptoms that people are experiencing, which brings them to our practice. People are often unaware of the broad scope of our specialty and the many different conditions we treat,” says Dr. Patel.

Identifying the underlying cause of the symptoms lies at the heart of what an allergy/immunology specialist does. For example, gastrointestinal symptoms may be the result of an intolerance or an allergy to a specific food, while asthma symptoms are almost always because of allergies. By the time a patient makes it to Fort Wayne Allergy & Asthma Consultants, he or she may have undergone treatment that has not fully resolved their issues. That’s why it becomes vital for Doctors Patel and Updegraff to spend time with patients, listening carefully to their concerns.

Ultimately, says Dr. Patel, “we want to improve patients’ quality of life. Most conditions are very treatable when properly diagnosed,” he says. “Appropriate treatment can lead to significant improvement in people’s lives; that’s why our patients get so excited to see us.”

It’s not only a gratifying specialty, but also a growing one. Dr. Patel recently welcomed Dr. Updegraff to the practice in order to accommodate more patients. In addition, he has added new satellite locations in Auburn and Marion. Both doctors work well together, sharing similar treatment philosophies including practicing evidence-based medicine and providing empathetic patient care. Details like keeping appointments on time, making sure patients receive same-day callbacks and educating patients about their specific conditions make a big difference to Dr. Patel and Dr. Updegraff.

“Proper patient care has been the mainstay of this practice for 67 years,” says Dr. Patel. “When patients come here, we truly listen to them. We accurately assess their problem, formulate a precise treatment plan and follow-through for the long-term.”

Dr. Updegraff agrees wholeheartedly. “We’re just trying to care for patients the same way we’d want to be treated,” he says simply. “We want to be the kind of physicians people trust and like to be around.”
