Bradley Company may be the largest provider of full-service real estate services in Indiana and western Michigan, but its heart hasn’t changed from the company that was formed forty years ago – the company that kept looking for new ways to help customers, and new customers to help. When Bob Toothaker set up shop in 1978 in Plymouth, his company managed tax credit, multifamily housing in Plymouth. As he managed his company, he continually looked for services he could add that would fulfill his clients’ needs. The first step was to grow into property and real estate management, and then into brokerage services when his son Brad joined the company in 1996. By 1997, Bradley Company had become an affiliate of CBRE, a national commercial real estate company.
Brad Toothaker eventually bought the business from his father in 2003. He continued to look for ways to enhance the company’s service offerings, which now include facility and maintenance services, real estate tax consulting, market research, and strategic planning for clients. As Bradley Company grew, Toothaker looked to take the full-service model he had built to new markets.
When Bradley Company eventually outgrew the geographic constraints of its affiliation with CBRE, it returned to independent status in 2013. Around the same time, Toothaker began talking to Stan Phillips of Harding Dahm in Fort Wayne about working together. By June of that year, Harding Dahm had become part of Bradley Company and brought the company’s full-service approach to the Fort Wayne market.
“It was a great opportunity to expand leverage, bandwidth and expertise,” explains Toothaker.
The move is representative of how Bradley Company conducts business in all its markets: with local people who have local expertise, looking for hands-on ways to serve every aspect of their clients’ commercial real estate needs.
“We’re really just a big local boutique, wherever we are,” Toothaker says. “We touch all aspects of the communities we are in; we’re very vested in them on a local level.”
When asked about the company’s upcoming 40-year anniversary, Toothaker insists on giving credit for Bradley Company’s success to its people.
“It’s teamwork,” says Toothaker. “Without all of the people involved, we wouldn’t be where we are. And it’s not just the people on the front lines; maintenance technicians, accountants and our back office colleagues are often the unsung heroes.”
As Toothaker reflects on this milestone, he also looks to the future. He hopes to take Bradley Company’s full-service, boutique feel to an even broader area. With the right opportunities, he’d like to look at expanding across state borders.
“We’ve got great people and great markets with plenty of room to grow,” says Toothaker. “We’re always looking to expand geographically, as well.”
