Thanks to Fort Wayne businessman and philanthropist, Bruce Dye, Fort Wayne was once home to the Web.com Tour’s Hotel Fitness Championship golf tournament. From 2013 to 2015 it was a treasure hosted at Sycamore Hills Golf Club. Many of today’s PGA Tour stars played the Hotel Fitness Championship before making it to the big stage.
My wife, Andrea, and I volunteered at the event each of the three years it was held here. It was our way of supporting Bruce and the tournament. Here are two of my best Hotel Fitness Championship memories.
Kevin Na – who won the PGA Tour’s A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier on July 8, just a few weeks ago. We were assigned to keep spectators quiet and outside the ropes on the tee at Sycamore’s par 3, hole number 7. When players came to the tee, some said hi while others were focused and kept to themselves. Na came to the tee and for a few minutes sat in my chair. We talked and laughed before he hit and moved on. He thanked us for volunteering. Great guy.
The Other Guy – later that day we moved to the green on number 7. After hitting his tee shot, a player from Colorado whose name I do not recall, came up and actually leaned into me. He asked if I could hit a shot as well as he had his. I said maybe once in 100 shots I could do that. He explained that he knows he hits good shots when the gallery and volunteers applaud. In other words, it was my job to make sure he was recognized for his shot making ability. No words of appreciation, no gratitude.
I’m glad it was Kevin Na and not the other guy doing the press conference after the Greenbrier tournament.
