When Aaron Burley decided to put his education and experience to work starting his own landscape design business, he says it was a pretty solitary experience. “It was just me and my pickup truck.”
Now, 11 years later, Burley Landscape Design has a solid customer base and six employees who custom design, install and maintain both commercial and residential properties in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio.
Burley grew up in Payne, Ohio, and graduated from Wayne Trace High School. He went on to Owens Community College to earn an associate degree in landscape and turf grass management. While in school, he worked for the Saxton Group in Fort Wayne, learning the intricacies of high-end residential landscaping and design.
“I started out as an intern and moved up the ranks pretty fast.” By his third year with the Saxton Group, he was a foreman and quickly became a designer the next year.
But, school called again and this time Burley went to Ohio State University to work on a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture, concentrating on landscape horticulture and landscape design.
With his two degrees and a wealth of experience, Burley decided it was time to start his own company. “I have pretty well-rounded experience and decided to take a little from each previous job and combine it into my own business.”
Burley says what sets Burley Landscape apart from other companies is that combination of education and experience; not only his own, but that of his employees.
“My landscape superintendent and my landscape foreman have 20-plus years’ experience and some education and training,” Burley continues.
All employees have had background checks and landscaping experience.
Burley Landscape’s motto is, “Elite landscape for every property.”
“When we do a design, we consider the architecture of the home, the scale, topography, soil conditions and the sun, wind and water exposure.” In addition to plants and shrubs, Burley also designs and installs hardscape such as retaining walls, patios and walks. Burley says landscape design, installation and maintenance is all that his company does. “We don’t mow grass, treat lawns or plow snow but may in the future.”
With his focus on both landscape and hardscape, having reliable and trustworthy employees and responsible business practices, Burley Landscape can give every property an elite landscape.
