Traveling can be stressful for anyone on the go. Add in an energetic child (or two), and sometimes that travel-induced stress can skyrocket. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be that way! Here are some tips to make traveling with kids easy breezy:
Plan Accordingly
The best thing to be when jetting off with kids in tow is prepared for anything and everything. Unfortunately, layovers can be long and delays can happen. Make sure you’re prepared with plenty of activities and snacks for your kiddos! Things like coloring books, handheld games and books easily fit inside a carry-on bag. Snacks such as crackers, bagels and fruit are also good to have on hand when your child is ready for something to munch on.
Be Aware of TSA Regulations and Procedures
TSA screening is something that every traveler must undergo before boarding a plane. Make sure you know the rules and regulations to make the process as smooth as possible. The 3-1-1 rule imposed by TSA can cause hiccups in your travel if you’re not mindful of the guidelines. Foods such as applesauce, jello and peanut butter must be 3.4 ounces or less. However, there are exceptions. Breast milk, formula and juice are allowed to be in quantities larger than 3.4 ounces, so long as they are in a reasonable amount for your trip. For children 12 and under, TSA has modified screening procedures to make the experience easy and stress-free!
Find the Kid’s Area
Many airports across the country have designated areas for children to let out some energy. These spaces include everything from bigger play areas with tunnels to slides to activity areas meant for keeping kids occupied. These kid-friendly areas extend beyond just playgrounds too! There are a number of airports that feature exhibits aimed at kids ranging from aviation history to art appreciation and interactive displays.
Know Where the Mother’s Rooms and Family Restrooms are Located
Airports across the country are taking note of the need for easy and accessible areas for parents on the go. Many airports now feature mother’s rooms and lactation pods so mothers can nurse their children in a peaceful, subdued environment. These areas provide a safe space and privacy for a nursing mother and her child when needed. Family restrooms are another helpful addition many airports are adopting. These restrooms often feature a single stall with a changing table and plenty of space for luggage and the whole gang.
Remember, even though taking to the skies with children isn’t always easy, it can be an enjoyable and even fun experience if you’re prepared!
