They’re Still the “One”

Long-term relationships mean a lot to Shawnee Construction & Engineering in Fort Wayne. It’s been that way since the company first started 50 years ago. Over the decades, Shawnee has been hired by countless iconic businesses in northeast Indiana, perhaps most notably, Ortho Northeast (ONE). The well-respected orthopedic practice has grown immensely in recent years and its management is so confident in Shawnee’s work, it allows Shawnee to obtain sub-contractor bids on its behalf for its projects, without the need to handle the contractor bidding process itself.

Q/ Why has ONE consistently chosen Shawnee for the dozens of construction projects it’s had over the years?

A/ Missy Garman, facilities manager, purchasing at ONE: ONE has worked with Shawnee since I can remember. One of the earliest jobs was our lobby remodel at our office at 5050 N. Clinton in the late 1980s. They did a great job and we never thought about calling another construction firm after that. Matt and John Schenkel, the president and vice president, have always been like big brothers to us, keeping us safe in our working environment during construction and adding laughter and friendships that have lasted years. I work closely with John on each project and we have bonded with a certain level of high trust. He is honest and true to his word, which is something ONE values. John and the folks at Shawnee are running a family business and it actually feels like family to us. Many of our physicians have hired Shawnee for their personal home construction needs. I think that speaks volumes about the quality and professionalism of Shawnee.

Q/ Why do you think Shawnee has been a standout company for so many years in northeast Indiana?

A/ Matt Schenkel, president of Shawnee: It’s really a matter of good service, taking care of our customers and treating them with respect. ONE is a premier operation and having aesthetically pleasing offices is necessary in that field. We stand behind all of our work with a guarantee for the life of the building. Whether it’s remodeling an entire office or simply repairing a door, we deliver consistent quality with our work.

A/ John A. Schenkel, Jr., vice president of Shawnee: We do a lot of work in medical services and each office operates a little differently. We’ve worked so much with ONE over the years and we know its people and they know us. They treat us fairly and we treat them fairly and we have a mutual respect for each other. It’s been a great relationship for 30 years and we look forward to working with them in the years to come.
