Since we are entering a new year, I thought it would be interesting and motivational to talk about money and income. If you are making goals for 2023, be sure to include some financial ones on your list.

In the tradition of one of my favorite writers, the late journalist Sydney J. Harris (Sept. 14, 1917 - Dec. 7, 1986), I spend time researching things. Harris’ column, “Things I Learned En Route to Looking Up Other Things,” was a fun read and was always entertaining. If you have been around a while like me, you probably remember his work.

So, here are some facts and statistics that I learned while looking for other things. The information is primarily from a writer at a company called Zippia named Abby McCain.

  • There are 22 million millionaires in the U.S. and 33% of them are women.
  • There are over 62 million millionaires on earth. The U.S has about 35% of the total.
  • The average millionaire is 57 years old.
  • 42% of millionaires are between 57 and 75 years old, and 19% are between 18 and 31 years old.
  • The five careers most likely to produce millionaires are engineering, accounting, law and, believe it or not, teaching and management.
  • The finance and investments industry produces the greatest number
  • of millionaires.
  • The other top industries are technology, manufacturing, fashion/retail and
  • health care.
  • To be in the top 1% of wealthy people in the U.S., you need to have $11 million
  • in net worth.
  • 79% of millionaires did not receive an inheritance.
  • Millionaires control about 46% of all wealth.

In summary, if you did not inherit or will not inherit money, there is still great hope for you. Remember, most millionaires didn’t get a dime from anyone. Whatever they may be, set your goals high, go out and work hard to achieve them.
