Fort Wayne International Airport is celebrating a number of accomplishments in 2022 with its focus now on 2023, which promises more growth. As recovery from the pandemic continued last year, FWA saw a greater amount of traffic in 2022. In 2021 there was a 6.4% increase in enplaned passengers and in 2020 a 66.4% increase. There are also a number of capacity wins to celebrate (and more upcoming) including a much sought after third, daily flight to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

Beginning April 4, 2023, American Airlines will bring a third daily, non-stop flight from DFW to FWA. This flight will increase FWA’s capacity and create even more opportunity for passengers to visit the Lone Star State, or connect to hundreds of destinations around the world. Not only will this flight add a third opportunity each day for passengers to fly into DFW, but it will also continue American Airlines’ use of larger aircraft on this longstanding route – using a 65-seat, CRJ-700 aircraft.

Currently, this third daily flight is available through May 31, 2023, with it tentatively scheduled to return in the fourth quarter of the year. Booking is now available through American Airlines at aa.com or by calling 1-800-433-7300.

In addition to American Airlines upcoming added capacity to DFW, there are other routes with more seats available and larger aircraft.

  • American Airlines added a third daily, non-stop flight to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in October 2022. Charlotte continues to be a high-performing route for FWA, and American Airlines has recognized the demand.
  • Delta Air Lines up-gauged the aircraft serving both the Atlanta and Minneapolis markets in October 2022. Passengers flying to and through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) will enjoy the larger CRJ-900 aircraft, which seats 76 passengers.
  • United Airlines added a third daily flight between FWA and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) in September 2022, increasing United’s capacity in the Fort Wayne market.
  • Beginning in June, all American Airlines flights to ORD will be on the 65-seat CRJ-700. These flights are currently split between CRJ-700s and the smaller, 50-seat ERJ-145. American will also add a third daily flight to the route.

In addition to aircraft and capacity growth, FWA also saw physical growth with the continuation of the ongoing Project Gateway. The West Terminal Expansion and Rehabilitation project is expected to wrap in late spring. The West Terminal Expansion boasts the renovation of all airline ticketing areas, the addition of two new gates, the renovation of existing gates 5-8, a number of accessibility features and much more. Following the end of the West Terminal Expansion and Rehabilitation project will be the beginning of the East Terminal Expansion and Renovation project. The East Terminal Expansion project scope includes relocating all passenger boarding bridges to the second floor of the terminal building, expanding the TSA Checkpoint, relocating the airport restaurant, creating a new frequent flyer lounge and more. The East Terminal Expansion and Renovation project is expected to be complete in 2025.
