It’s hard to believe that we are over halfway through 2023 and, as the year has advanced, Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA) has soared! The airport has continued to recover from the 2020 pandemic, and there has been a great deal of positive change and progress as we move away from recovering and instead focusing on the future and growth.
FWA is celebrating a busy summer, with three straight months outperforming pre-pandemic numbers from 2019 – FWA’s 10th year of continuous growth prior to 2020. Year-to-date (as of July 2023) FWA is up 7.54% in enplanements (outbound passengers) compared to 2022. In total passenger traffic compared to last year, FWA is up 8.3%. Moving toward the end of 2023, the airport is hopeful to complete the year on a high note with passenger traffic numbers that not only meet, but exceed the previous most successful year.
Beginning this month, United Airlines is adding an additional fourth daily, nonstop flight to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) from FWA. This will operate five days a week with a 6:20 a.m. departure to ORD and a 9:05 p.m. arrival at FWA. This additional flight, as well as United’s three existing nonstop daily ORD flights, continues to operate on the 50-seat CRJ aircraft and shows United’s interest in increasing its’ presence in the Fort Wayne market. While nonstop service to ORD is great for those with business in the Chicago area, it serves as an important hub and connecting airport for passengers flying from FWA to anywhere in the world. As of August 2023, ORD boasts over 883 direct daily flights to 166 U.S. cities and 121 daily direct flights to 64 international destinations – all with just one stop from FWA.
While the fourth daily frequency is only available to book through the end of October, a strong demand will be an encouraging sign for both United and FWA, and could lead to a permanent fourth daily flight. Book now via united.com or call 1 (800) 241-6522.
In addition to positive news from United Airlines, FWA has also seen continued growth and success from other airline carriers and routes. Earlier this year it was announced that American Airlines would be adding a third daily, nonstop flight from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to FWA. This additional frequency began in April and was expected to last only through May 31, however it was so successful that American added the third daily flight permanently and increased the size of the aircraft. All of American’s nonstop Dallas flights are now operated on the 75-seat Embraer-175 aircraft. American also continues to have success with its own recently added third daily flight to ORD, which returned over the summer.
FWA’s success would not be possible without the support of the local community. Fly local – fly FWA! Stay up to date at fwairport.com.
