The Greater Fort Wayne Inc. 2024 Annual Meeting was a celebration of excellence, recognizing individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to our community and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to excellence. This year, out of 32 applicants, three distinguished organizations were honored as part of the Business Excellence Awards: MKM architecture + design, Neighborhood Health, and City Utilities. Their stories and achievements showcase their dedication to innovation, inclusivity and community engagement.

MKM architecture + design: Excellence in Small Business
MKM architecture + design, a firm with a legacy dating back to 1981, has consistently evolved to meet the changing needs of its clients and community. Initially focused on historic preservation and public library projects, MKM has expanded its portfolio to serve health care clients across the Midwest. In 2012, the firm rebranded to MKM architecture + design, emphasizing projects that improve community health and inclusive placemaking.

MKM’s journey is marked by a culture grounded in empathy, critical thinking and curiosity. Its team’s dedication to providing right-sized solutions to complex problems has earned the firm recognition as one of Modern Healthcare magazine’s “Top Architecture Firms” for 17 consecutive years. This commitment to excellence is reflected in MKM’s mission to enhance the health and well-being of the communities it serves.

The firm’s recent relocation to a renovated warehouse in Fort Wayne’s East Central neighborhood underscores its strategic investment in the area. This move not only supports the company’s growth, but also provides a platform for local events and programs, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of the neighborhood.

Neighborhood Health: Excellence in Nonprofit
Neighborhood Health has been a pillar of the Fort Wayne community for over 50 years, originating as Three Rivers Health Services in 1969. Over the decades, the organization has expanded its services to include dental health, optometry, behavioral health and chiropractic care, addressing the comprehensive health needs of the community.

Neighborhood Health’s commitment to quality care and inclusivity has earned it numerous accolades, including the Outstanding Healthcare Facility award from Custom Learning Systems, and multiple community health resource badges from the Department of Health Resource Services Administration. Its holistic approach ensures that all patients, regardless of their financial situation, receive compassionate and respectful care.

The organization’s impact extends beyond health care. By focusing on positive health outcomes, Neighborhood Health contributes to the economic vitality of Fort Wayne and Allen County. Its efforts in reducing low-birth-weight babies, managing chronic conditions and promoting preventive care have measurable benefits for the community’s well-being and prosperity.

City Utilities: Greater Fort Wayne Inc. Business Excellence Award
City Utilities has a rich history dating back to 1880, evolving from its early days of well water supply to a comprehensive utility service provider. City Utilities’ commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident in its extensive infrastructure projects, including its Electric Microgrid, and the Three Rivers Protection and Overflow Reduction Tunnel, which will reduce combined sewer overflows by 90% by 2025.

City Utilities’ dedication to excellence is reflected in its numerous awards, such as the NACWA Platinum Peak Performance Award and the Best Tasting Water in Indiana Award. Its strategic initiatives prioritize public health, environmental stewardship and community growth, ensuring that it remains a trusted utility provider for the region.

Beyond providing essential services, City Utilities actively fosters economic development, often involved in the early stages of business expansion and new development to the Greater Fort Wayne area. Its collaborations with university students form a robust internship program, partnerships with students from the Anthis Career Center promote skilled trades, and a scholarship program in partnership with the Anthony Wayne Rotary Club supports workforce development and STEM education, contributing to the region’s economic and social prosperity.

These Excellence Awards highlight organizations that embody the spirit of innovation, inclusivity and community commitment. MKM architecture + design, Neighborhood Health, and City Utilities stand as examples of excellence, demonstrating how dedication to quality and community can drive positive change and foster a thriving, inclusive environment. Their achievements inspire others, reinforcing the strength and vitality of the Fort Wayne community.
