Intention Powers Successful Networking

When I started my career, networking was intimidating — like a rite of passage. My simple strategy was to get in, get out and hope for the best. Then, I discovered the power of intention. My mind shifted to view networking as a mutually beneficial opportunity to connect. It’s not always about what you get. It’s also about what you can give.

Now, I value the art of networking. The secret? Be purposeful. Seize the opportunity.

Research. Seek opportunities that align with your business or professional goals. Before the event, find out who will be there. Identify at least one person who could be a valuable connection. Then, make it your purpose to meet them.

For example, I learned a professional recruiter would be at a networking event I was attending. I made it a point to meet her, which led to great conversations and a promising career opportunity. In turn, I became a referral and informational resource for that company.

Set goals. At a recent fundraiser event, business owner Lisa Mungovan and I had an insightful conversation. She shared that her goal for each networking event is to meet two new people. What a terrific way to expand her network! If she attends two networking events monthly, she gains 48 new connections a year.

Follow through. Beyond the initial chat and exchange of contact information, take initiative. Cultivate your newfound connections by scheduling a follow-on call or a one-to-one meeting to keep the momentum going.

Also, remember to check in occasionally with your existing contacts.

Our region offers rich networking opportunities through professional networking groups, referral marketing organizations, nonprofits and associations.

Intentional networking creates genuine, mutually beneficial relationships to propel your career and professional development.
