If you feel like you have read this article or something like it before, you are correct. For the last several years, talks of Real ID going into effect have been swirling, and now the countdown is on. If you have not upgraded your government-issued identification to a Real ID yet, now is the time!

Because of circumstances resulting from the pandemic, the Department of Homeland Security extended previous deadlines to update all government issued identification to the Real ID to May 7, 2025, which is now less than a year away. The Real ID will be necessary for flying on commercial aircraft and entering government facilities. Everyone has until May 7, 2025 to obtain Real ID compliant identification. Those without a Real ID compliant identification card will not be allowed to pass through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoint to board a commercial aircraft.

The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 following government standards put into action after 9/11. The Real ID Act set standards for the issuance of identification, such as a drivers license, for the federal government. These regulations work to establish minimum security standards across the board for state-licensed identification and allow all federal agencies, such as TSA, to deny those who are in non-compliance. A Real ID will also be needed to enter certain federal facilities, as well as to visit military bases.

A Real ID is required for everyone applying for a new Indiana credential, including a drivers license, learners permit or identification card. Those that wish to renew, amend or replace their current Indiana credential have the option to apply for a Real ID or a non-compliant credential, but are encouraged to obtain a Real ID compliant credential when receiving a new license, especially if you intend to travel.

Unsure if you have a Real ID compliant drivers license? Simply look for a star symbol located in the upper portion of the card. If there is not a star on the card, it likely is not Real ID compliant and a new drivers license will need to be obtained before May 7, 2025. You can upgrade to a

Real ID at any Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) branch by bringing the required documentation when renewing your drivers license. Required documentation includes one document proving identity, one document proving lawful status, one document proving your Social Security number and two documents proving Indiana residency. If you have a unique situation such as a name change, additional documentation may be necessary.

If you have questions about Real ID or the process, you can visit the TSA website (tsa.gov) or the Indiana BMV website (in.gov/bmv).
