Q1: Congratulations on your new position with Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana! Tell us a little about your career path that led you here.
I’ve had the privilege of working for several nonprofits in our community. After graduating from Hope College in Holland, Michigan with a dual major in business management and dance, I quickly realized that I wanted to make a difference in the community in the nonprofit sector. In my first role at Muscular Dystrophy Association of Northern Indiana (MDA), I started as a program coordinator and was quickly promoted to executive director. I had the privilege of leading a team, raising funds to fight neuromuscular disease, and run a local clinic and summer camp. After nine years with MDA, I felt ready for my next adventure. I started with the Fort Wayne Museum of Art as associate director of advancement and events. I was then promoted to director of advancement and events, and then again to VP and chief development officer. I had the joy of running the high-profile ArtRageous Gala, community-loved Chalk
Walk event, and the Day of the Dead Celebration. We celebrated the 100th anniversary of the museum, grew the Planned Giving Society, and I increased the individual giving for the Museum significantly. I love fundraising; connecting donors and corporate entities to a worthwhile mission that has a direct impact in our community is meaningful and fun! I aspire to continue my efforts at Junior Achievement.
Q2: What does it mean to be chief growth officer? What do you hope to accomplish in this role?
Great question! Any new staff member to a new organization will probably agree with my answer of, “I’m still figuring it out!” I’ve been hired to lead the fundraising charge for the local office in Allen County and beyond, and to learn from current JA president, Lena Yarian. JA has grown significantly over the last five years, and the need for strategy, oversight and streamlined systems is necessary. I plan to incorporate systems and processes, and grow fundraising and resource development in Allen County and beyond. I hope to emulate Lena and her awesome ability to connect with donors and make amazing things happen. I believe my strong relationship skills will be a great asset to the organization, too.
Q3: What about Junior Achievement drew you to the organization?
Lena and the amazing reputation of the organization brought me to this position. JA’s purpose is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in the local economy. I wish to pair my passion for education, knowledge and professional experiences to raise funds for Fort Wayne’s future leaders. I plan to continue to build relationships that will sustain the organization for years to come.
Q4: While you’ve held similar positions in the past, how do you feel this role at JA will help you grow even more?
I have had amazing experiences, leaders and mentors throughout my career thus far. I have continued my professional development by earning my Certified Fund Raising Executive credential (CFRE), plus I have over 15 years of leadership experience managing teams and fundraising plans. This role at JA will stretch and challenge me to learn a new nonprofit industry, understand a larger organization and learn from a seasoned president in preparation to lead in the future.
Q5: Tell us a little about your life outside of work. What are your interests and hobbies?
I enjoy exercising and teaching exercise classes. I teach yoga, kickboxing and aerobics at the YMCA and Fusion Yoga. I love to take walks with friends and Brian, my significant other. I enjoy spending time with family and friends, including my three nieces, two nephews, three great-nieces and nephews, and my mom and dad. Brian and I enjoy traveling and attending community events together — we frequent the Embassy, nonprofit events and theater.
Q6: What do you most look forward to about the holiday season?
The holidays allow us to slow down, love on our families and friends, and be reminded of God’s love. My traditions include Christmas worship (singing Christmas songs is my favorite), Christmas tree decorating, baking cookies with my mom, and shopping on Black Friday with my nieces. Plus, all the Christmas theater including the Nutcracker, shows at the Embassy and more!
Q7: What are your favorite things to do in and around the city of Fort Wayne?
Fort Wayne is home. It’s where I grew up and where my friends and family live. I love the arts and culture in Fort Wayne — the FWMoA, Ballet, Civic Theatre, Embassy and more. We are so lucky to have so much talent in our backyards.
