According to the Institute for Women’s Policy and Research, Black women earned between 49.6 and 66.5 cents (each State differs) for every dollar White men earned nationally. Based on wage trends during the last two decades, it will take over 200 years or until 2227 for Black women’s pay to equal White men’s in this country. However, here are four career tips that have been developed by career advisors to help Black women win in the workplace.
Know Who You Are
Understanding who you are and how you want to impact the world is a self-discovery journey that allows you to align yourself with fulfilling and rewarding employment opportunities. Self-discovery and deliberate practice are what makes most talented professionals great at their craft.
Network
Job seekers need a winning LinkedIn profile, a compelling resumé, and a cover letter with an employment strategy — but nothing beats meeting people in real life and networking with industry professionals. Many companies source hires via employee referrals. Get uncomfortable and meet new people.
Research Salary Trends
The number one reason Black women do not get paid the salary they are worth is because they don’t really know how much they should be getting paid. Networking with people in the same industry, observing pay scales on job listings and visiting online salary databases can help you determine just how much you are worth. Knowing the numbers can help when negotiating raises or job offers.
Share Goals
A great career tip is to remember that “closed mouths don’t get fed.” It’s up to you to be clear with your managers about your goals and desire for upward mobility. Don’t assume your manager knows what your goals are. Speak up!
