The Last Word

The holiday season is here and I truly cannot wrap my brain around how quickly this year flew by. In fact, one year ago I was writing my very first ‘Last Word’ and my sentiment since then has not changed. In this season centered around gratitude, I remain indelibly thankful for the opportunity I’ve been given to share this publication with you.

I digress – back to the holidays. This season is such a magical stretch of time for so many, but at the same token a very demanding time. If you’re anything like me (a planner, neat-freak and a bit of a perfectionist) you could benefit from some holiday related life-hacks. Make life a little easier, and hosting or attending gatherings more relaxed and enjoyable.

  • Prep food in advance. Mashed potatoes, soups and salads can be made ahead, as well as dough-based deserts, cookies and several pies. Don’t try to cram everything into a single day.
  • Invite your slow cooker to parties. I am a huge fan of Crock-Pots because, let’s be honest, the recipes are simple, delicious, they feed a large group and there’s minimal work involved. They can also be a big help for family or friends hosting holiday get-togethers.
  • Use the Santa’s Bag app to help manage Christmas gift recipients, planning, shopping and budgets. This app has been recommended by The New York Times, Forbes Magazine and The Huffington Post, to name a few.
  • Have a child who is worried about how Ol’ Saint Nick will visit the house without a chimney? Santa’s Magic Key can help with that. Hang it on your door on Christmas Eve and let the “magic” take care of the rest.
  • Neatly store your gift-wrapping supplies. Tedious, but worth it. Don’t want to purchase a gift-wrap storage container? Use a garment bag if you have one lying around the house.

Above everything else, remember to take time for yourself and do your best to be in the moment with your loved ones. I know all too well how easy it is to get wrapped up in the highlight reels of life, but the messy and unkempt moments are oftentimes the most meaningful. Cheers!
