Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

Stepping out of my comfort zone has always been tough for me and I know plenty of others resonate with that. Whether it be accepting or training for a new position at work, going to an event or hang-out with lots of unfamiliar faces, or simply trying a new exercise class, the anxiety starts to creep in.

Recently our staff here at Business People took a self-defense course at a local martial arts studio. What a fun way to learn how to kick some butt while also getting in a good work out, right? Don’t get me wrong, it was all of that (and more), but I can’t say it didn’t push me out of my happy little bubble of comfort. Our instructor is a Sensei with over 35 yeas of experience in martial arts. He’s trained under several Grand Masters, including one who was a stunt double for Mr. Miyagi in “The Karate Kid” – I mean, come on!

Although I knew there was no judgment in the room, throwing punches, kicks and knees while simultaneously yelling, “TIA!” really threw me for a loop. And this was not some wimpy yell — we had to project. We practiced several techniques for a good 45 minutes and as time went on I started to feel more at ease. We learned a lot in terms of physicality, but we also learned the importance of being aware of our surroundings, and carrying and presenting ourselves in a confident manner. The lessons we took away from the class are those that we can use the rest of our lives.

It’s safe to say that 95% of the time I do take the plunge and try something new, I’m glad I did. Temporary discomfort and fear are worth it in the long run. It’s good to be pushed out of our comfort zone from time to time, as normally it results in bettering yourself as a person. And this time I punched through a board in the process – TIA!
